Overview:
The ILM Level 5 Certificate in Leadership and Management Skills aims to give practising or potential managers the foundation for their formal development in this role. The qualification does this by developing comprehensive leadership and management skills.

Understanding the management role
On completion of this mandatory unit participants are expected to confidently be able to:
Explain their organisation’s structure and functional areas.
Identify their organisation’s stakeholders and explain their objectives.
Describe the specific responsibilities of middle managers in enabling their organisation to achieve its goals.
Explain the positive and negative effects that interpersonal relationships and communication skills can have on managerial performance in their organisation.
Identify barriers to communication and effective interpersonal relationships in their organisation and devise strategies to overcome these in their own area of work.
Critically assess their own knowledge, skills, personal attributes and behaviour and their effect on their own managerial ability.
Determine priorities for further development and plan activities to achieve these.

On completion of this mandatory unit participants are expected to confidently be able to:
1) Review the prevailing leadership styles in their organisation and levels of motivation and commitment amongst the people they lead.
The review should consider:
The prevailing leadership styles used in the organisation, using examples of behaviour to illustrate and substantiate the analysis.
The effect that these leadership styles have on behaviour and performance of individuals and teams in the organisation.
The levels of motivation and commitment to the organisation’s values and goals amongst the people you lead, using examples of behaviour to illustrate and substantiate your analysis.
Your assessment of the factors shaping these levels of motivation and commitment.
2) Critically review their own effectiveness as a leader
The review should assess your own abilities to:
Use a repertoire of leadership styles in different situations and with different people to fulfil the leadership role.
Communicate the organisation’s values and goals to others.
Motivate others and build commitment to the organisation’s values and goals.
